Prayer Shawls, also called Mantles, Comfort Shawls, and Peace Shawls, are knitted with the prayers of the knitter to surround the recipient in prayers that can be both seen and felt. Through this ministry prayers are able to encompass people in a tactile way throughout surgery, recovery, and challenging times of life.
Pine Island Presbyterian Church's Prayer Shawl Ministry is an opportunity for knitters to reach out in prayer and concern to others, some of whom they know well and others they will never meet. Prayer Shawl recipients are wrapped in the warm and loving prayers of a Shawl and receive God's love in a touchable way.
Prayer Shawls are always given to recipients. The ministry is supported by gifts from both knitters and recipients of Shawls who want the blessings of this ministry to be shared with others.
"Shawls ... made for centuries universal and embracing,
symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving, God.
They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace,
mother, hug, shelter and beautify.
Those who have received these shawls have been
uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to
fly above their troubles…”
